The Venice NC is taking applications to fund community improvement projects. There is $40,000 total available to fund projects up to $5,000 per project. Applications are due MARCH 1, 2008 .

Philly-LA Jazz & Poetry with Heat Press: ELLIOTT LEVIN, ERIC PRIESTLEY, CHARLES BIVINS and works of the late WILL PERKINS
A night of poetry and jazz. ELLIOTT LEVIN, a Philly-based saxophonist and poet, has played with avant-gardists Cecil Taylor, Odean Pope, and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. ERIC PRIESTLEY (Abracadabra) was a founding member of the Watts Writers Workshop and is author of Raw Dog (Holloway). CHARLES BIVINS (Music in Silence) is the subject of a short documentary, Savage Rose, by Linda Janakos. Texts of the late Philly performance poet WILL PERKINS (!Scat) will be read by editor C. Natale Peditto.

CHARLOTTE INNES’s poetry has appeared in The Best American Spiritual Writing 2006, The Hudson Review, The Sewanee Review and Speechless Magazine. She writes for The Los Angeles Times and The Nation. JACKSON WHEELER is author of Swimming Past Iceland, and is contributor to A Near Country: Poems of Loss with Glenna Luschei and David Oliveira; and What Needs to Be Said (SOLO Café #3).

SUZANNE LUMMIS is teacher, author, founder of the Los Angeles Poetry Festival, editor behind Speechless on the web, a Nearly Fatal Woman, and her books include Falling Short of Heaven (Pennywhistle), Idiosyncrasies: Poems and Spreading the Word (both Red Wind), and In Danger (Roundhouse). She was also co-editor of one of the great SoCal poetry anthologies, with Charles Webb, Grand Passion. “If L.A. has anything like a poetry ‘community’ these days, I think it is in large part owing to the presence of Suzanne Lummis—one of L.A.'s major poetic voices, a highly influential teacher, keeper of the dark flame of L.A. noir, and one of the leading graduates of the historically important Fresno poetry scene. May she thrive, and may L.A. poetry thrive with her.”—B.H. Fairchild. The Collected Poems of PHILIP WHALEN
Tonight features poets celebrating the release of The Collected Poems of Philip Whalen (Wesleyan), edited by MICHAEL ROTHENBERG. Poet PHILIP WHALEN was a key figure in the San Francisco Renaissance and the author of the collections Overtime: Selected Poems; Canoeing up Cabarga Creek: Buddhist Poems 1955-1986; Enough Said, 1974-1979; and Heavy Breathing: Poems 1967-1980. Whalen’s influence extends across beat culture to contemporary language poets and beyond. Guests and readers include DAVID MELTZER, CLARK COOLIDGE, TERRI CARRION, ARAM SAROYAN, LEWIS MACADAMS, PAUL VANGELISTI, PHOEBE OZUNA, NEELI CHERKOVSKI, and editor MICHAEL ROTHENBERG.

BEYOND MUSIC and PROJECT ROOM Show: PARTY PEOPLE, TOBIAS JELINEK, SEA OTTER, GENEVA JACUZZI, JASON YATES and Special Guests
Join us for an evening of experimental audio-visual collaborative works. Improvisational sound artists, PARTY PEOPLE have recently performed at New Image Art and ArtShare LA. SEA OTTER creates sonic, visual solo laptop and video projection performance pieces. His work has been exhibited worldwide, most recently at The Lab 101 Gallery. His CDs include Swim Team (Vol. 1). TOBIAS JELINEK, co-owner of Young & Jelinek boutique/event space, has created film and video installations with curators from the Whitney and Guggenheim, choreographer Cori Olinghouse and filmmaker Bill Brand. Musician GENEVA JACUZZI (aka Geneva Garvin) has worked under the aliases Pregnant, Hot Pajamas, and Sex Carpet. She currently performs with Bubonic Plague. Visual artist JASON YATES creates work with Fast Friends Inc. He has collaborated with George Clinton and Ariel Pink.

In THE PROJECT ROOM: “One Chord Wonders”
A show focusing on ideas about collaboration at the intersection of art and music. The group show will feature work by Ariel Rosenburg, Keith Knittel, Jason Yates, Matthew Salata, David Aron, Toni Young, Megan Whitmarsh, Rich Gaccione and more.

BEYOND MUSIC: THOMAS ANKERSMIT, MITCHELL BROWN, PHILL NIBLOCK, and TOM RECCHION
THOMAS ANKERSMIT (The Netherlands) works with saxophone, synthesizer and computer music independently and with other artists such as Tony Conrad, Borbetomagus and Alvin Lucier since 1998. MITCHELL BROWN employs electro-acoustics, interactives, psychoactives, and improvisation. Filmmaker and composer PHILL NIBLOCK makes thick, loud drones of music filled with microtones of instrumental timbres which generate many other tones in the performance space. TOM RECCHION, artist and composer in Southern California since the '70s, co-created the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS), and uses record manipulation, live tape loops, and free improvisation in his work. SPECIAL ADMISSION: $12.

SHARON DOUBIAGO is author of Hard Country (West End), South America Mi Hija (University of Pittsburgh), and the story collections, El Nino (Lost Roads), and The Book of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes (Graywolf). Her other titles include The Husband Arcane: The Arcane of O (Gorda Plate); Psyche Drives the Coast (Empty Bowl), Body and Soul (Cedar Hill), and Greatest Hits, 1976-2003 (Pudding House). Her Love on the Streets, Selected and New Poems is forthcoming from Pittsburgh. LENORE WEISS’s poetry has been published in Bridges: A Jewish Feminist Journal, Paterson Literary Review, and Exquisite Corpse. Her latest chapbook is Sh’ma Yis’rael (Hear, Oh Israel). At 7pm, BLACK SHOE POLISH. Within the free collective BSP, words that should never be said collide with notes that should never be played. Fiery poetic painters Theresa Hulme and Rex Butters slap sense into words through multi-dimensional discourse. Gerry Fialka, Rex and 7 year old Miles Butters stir keyboards, demented music boxes, guitars, slide whistles, harmonicas, and bass whistle in a cauldron of creative chaos, creating ink stained improvisational interplay. Spoken Word and Free Improvisation as it was never meant to be, Black Shoe Polish reconvenes the Inconceivable.

At 8pm, FREDDY GINNS & ZEBRA PARTY provide original witty lyrics to their jazzy blues ala Mose Allison and Detroit funk keyboardist Lyman Woodard.

At 9pm Lyrical multi-instrumentalist ERIC AHLBERG'S JAZZ WORKSHOP recall the explorations of Public Enemy, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and John Coltrane with tasty world beat tangents.

The Venice Arts Council is opposed to Permit Parking in Venice.
We believe this is just another attempt to gentrify Venice and criminalize
poor, homeless and nomadic artists. Why do people move to Venice and
try to stamp out it's funky bohemian lifestyles? We saw the play (Rent), the opera(La Boheme),
the movie(Feeding The Sparrows). It is the universal drama or acquisitive greed vs creative expression.
But it is really disheartening to see Bill Rosendahl supporting this.

Wasn't September amazing. Started with that Labor Day party at Linda Goodmans , First Friday at Robin's, Jazz Funk Fest, VCHC's Venice World Music Festival, Equinox Party at Beyond Baroque, topped off with the Abbot Kinney Fest, where VAC shared a table with Beyond Baroque and the Venice Art Walls! But we are still not partied out.

It's First Friday Tonite on Abbot Kinney. Walk, don't drive over.

Good Morning, friends,

Tony Alva grew up in and around a So Cal ghetto that came to be known as Dogtown;
Venice local Erik Joule grew up in the south of France with hippy parents.

Alva made fame, young and fast, rocketing out of a swimming pool on a skateboard and
into the freedom of the sky; Joule began his working life in an unglamorous Gap
stockroom. Today, he's the Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Design at
Quiksilver. And Alva—Alva is Alva. "The organic evolution of Abbot Kinney—it's like
putting arsenic on granola," he recently quipped, but he was also serious.

This weekend Alva and Joule speak on a panel about Venice, gentrification, and us—
Venetians—then and now. And where we're going to. Saturday, July 28 from 12:30 p.m. –
2:30 pm at the QuikSilverEdition Mission 1621 Abbot Kinney Blvd. (in the space above
Stronghold, the jean company, brainchild of local Michael Cassel)

Don't expect the cliché. Mr. Alva is rarely given the credit for the global and historical view
that he puts together. And we'll be asking him why he placed his new store in the heart of
Little Ethiopia as well as throw-backs to the days he lived in a Venice garage. While Joule,
the executive, holds unimpeachable street creds as a Venice patriot and talks in terms that
demonstrate his sojourns to India, "The only thing we have is the ability to connect. To
reach out to one another," he says.

Alva and Joule, along with their fellow panelist, designer Elizabeth Paige Smith, promise to
give the "Venice-is-changing-topic" a fresh spin. Smith, whose sculptural furniture work
has been showcased by LACMA, recently launched a gallery on Abbot Kinney—where she's
continued Venice's tradition of bringing together the artistic community while at the same
time finding a way in new Venice.

On August 11, 2007 between Noon and 5pm the Oakwood Community is having a picnic and BBQ Cook-off at the Oakwood Recreation Center.   People will come from all over our community and break bread together. This will be a day when our diversity will shine like so many different precious, brilliant gems as we are united in enjoying good fun, good food, and our ties to our neighborhood. One of Oakwood's greatest strengths has been all of the variety we bring to Venice. Let's celebrate it and each other.

So come out, get to know your neighbors, bring a dish, show off your best recipe and compete in the Cook-off for fantastic prizes, be among the privileged few to taste some of the best BBQ in Venice made by Captain Jerry Johnson and his crew at station 63 (make sure to arrive early), and get to know more about the Venice Neighborhood Council! There will be activities for the kids: a bouncy house, three legged races, wheel barrel races, and other fun games for adults as well. There will be awesome music! Imagine all Karl Marx would have to say after one hundred years of just being able to watch...
Howard Zinn’s play, “Marx in Soho” portrays the return of Marx. Embedded in some secular afterlife where intellectuals, artists, and radicals are sent, Marx is given permission by the administrative committee to return to Soho London to have his say. But through a bureaucratic mix–up, he winds up in SOHO in New York.   From there the audience is given a rare glimpse of a Marx seldom talked about; Marx the man. The Play offers an entertaining and thorough introduction to a person who knows little about Marx’s life, while also offering valuable insight to students of his ideas.

Author of “ A People’s History of the United States,” Howard Zinn humanizes the man behind the ideas in “Marx In Soho;” casting a divergent light from the totalitarian movements his theories have often been associated with. Responding to the fall of the Soviet Union and the conventional perception that Marx’s ideas are dead, Zinn resurrects this controversial historical figure, embraces democracy and passionately rejects the ideological rigidity of many of his followers with the phrase “I am not a Marxist.” Instead we come to know Marx as a complex character struggling to survive with his family as an impoverished immigrant in London. Marx returns to clear his name and tell us about his life with his wife, daughters, friends and enemies. In poignant, funny, and intimate narrative, Zinn convinces us not only that Marx is not dead but rather his critique of capitalism is more than relevant today.

Howard Zinn’s Marx alone occupies the stage. “Marx has different voices. The actor has to show Marx’s outrage at social injustice, express the pedantic Marx, the vindictive Marx, Marx, the loving family man, Marx as Humorists, and a Marx that can laugh at his enemies”

This one-time Los Angeles performance is a fundraiser. Suggested minimum donations are $15 for the show and $5 for dinner with other amounts gladly accepted. The proceeds will be donated to the Venice Food Not Bombs, which feeds hundreds of hungry and homeless people every week.

More about Jeff Greenwald... In the course of his travels, Greenwald has had the opportunity to participate in a number of unusual projects. In 1979, during his first trip to Asia, he designed urban playgrounds for UNICEF and the Nepal Children’s Organization. Several months later, arriving in Thailand during the Khmer civil war, he served as a volunteer water engineer at Khao-I-Dang—the largest of the Cambodian refugee camps. In the Spring of 1983, he was awarded a Journalism Fellowship by the Rotary International Foundation, and departed for a second trip to Asia. During this 16-month residence he lived in Kathmandu, Nepal, and made excursions to the Himalaya, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Japan, Java and Bali.

His first book, Mr. Raja’s Neighborhood: Letters from Nepal (John Daniel, 1986), is still in print. Shopping for Buddhas, first published by Harper & Row in 1990, was reissued in 1996 by Lonely Planet Publications; the new edition won the Lowell Thomas Gold Award for Best Travel Book of 1996. Greenwald divides his time between California and Asia, publishing stories and essays in a variety of publications—including The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and Salon.com.

Mujeres de Colores at SPARC - 685 Venice Blvd, 310-822-9560

SPARC is honored to present the work of Salt Lake City Utah artist Kim Martinez to the Los Angeles community for the first time. The exhibition will feature a series of paintings on aluminum and drawings on polyester entitled "Mujeres de Colores." The exhibition will be available for viewing June 30-July 21.

Kim creates characters that are part real, part imagined. The beautifully rendered paintings are constructed from her memories of specific women and draw on imagery from super heroes, fashion, and other contemporary female identities. She manipulates these various codes to suggest political, social and personal narratives.

BEYOND BAROQUE kicks off its BEYOND ACADEMIA POETRY LECTURE SERIES based on the idea that learning about poetry is for everyone and not just for college students. The series starts with a lecture by LA-based poet and teacher BRENDAN CONSTANTINE. His lecture will cover the history and use of a certain word - one you still can't use on the radio - and its connection to and ownership by poetry. Beyond Academia is curated by Carlye Archibeque and Richard Modiano.

He has performed at Timothy Leary's home and was kissed on the lips by Gregory Corso. YVETTE JOHNSON has published two chapbooks called Poem and Other Poems and Bluffs. MITCHELL UNTCH has been featured at Dutton's and was recently published in White Pelican Review. From the LA Poetry Festival: 2006 PEN Rosenthal Fellow EVANGELINE GANADEN has translated the poetry of Charles Harper Webb into Tagalog/Philippino for the anthology Open Windows. MARY KITE is author of The Bamboo Librarian and Promenade Through A Precipitous Park (Blue Press). Her work has been featured in CHAIN, square one, Rain Taxi and The Poetry Project Newsletter. She will be joined by Justin Veach, of High Energy Constructs. JACK COLLOM's most recent collections of poems include The Busking Book (Baksun), Exchanges of Earth and Sky (Fish Drum), and Extremes and Balances(Farfalla/McMillan & Parrish). His major collection, Red Car Goes By: Selected Poems 1955-2000, was published by Tuumba Press in 2001. His books include Little Grand Island, Arguing with Something Plato Said, 8-Ball, and Entering the City. His essays on teaching and collections of children's poetry appear in Moving Windows and Poetry Everywhere. GLORIA FRYM's last book of poems, Homeless At Home, won an American Book Award. When we finished Wal Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, we knew the fight was far from over but didn't know what the next step would be. Then we discovered a recent UC Berkeley Labor Center study showing that in the last three years, up to 20,000 fewer children of grocery workers have access to the company's health care. While the cost of living is soaring in SoCal, our grocery workers are getting pay cut after pay cut. These folks have not seen one penny in raises in over five years!

It's time to hold the employers at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons accountable for their greed. These companies made record profits of over $8.3 BILLION last year.

David Dillon, Jeff Noddle and Steve Burd are the CEOs in charge (otherwise known as The Gang of 3) Last year they took home bonuses that amounted to $27.2 Million! That money went directly into their pockets while the families that keep the stores running can't afford even basic, human needs.

We've launched a campaign (with a short film, of course!) to help the grocery workers negotiate a fair contract over the next few weeks. We'll keep the heat on until the 3 guys that make the decisions make the right one.

We know that when you drive by your local Ralphs, Vons or Albertsons things look fine from the outside, but behind closed doors people are getting seriously swindled. The corporate supermarket chains have already announced their intention to lock out all their workers if there is a work stoppage, so it's time for us to show them what the consequences will be if they take such a reckless move.

Because no one can resist the magic of the numbers, EPS atelier is hosting 070707, a free afternoon event featuring gallery talks from "Family Garden" artists Jennifer Everhart, Jennifer Vanderpool, Jennifer Wolf and Elizabeth Paige Smith; spoken word from Milo Martin; music from Matt Ellis and a special performance by "Family Garden" artist Amy Kaps.

The program is scheduled at short intervals throughout the afternoon, so that anyone staying at the gallery longer than 20 minutes will be able to catch something of interest, or can feel free to spend the whole afternoon.

The Ford Amphitheatre concert is the only presentation in Los Angeles in 2007 of this emblematic South American band from the ‘60’s in their 40th anniversary world tour where will be presenting songs from their new album Peque?o Mundo, plus many timeless hits. Peque?o Mundo continues Inti-Illimani’s exploration of Latin American, Afro-Latino, and Italian sounds and includes the group’s first foray into jazz-flavored composition. His lecture will cover the history and use of a certain word - one you still can't use on the radio - and its connection to and ownership by poetry. Albert Brooks, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Drew Carey, Larry King (MC), Jonathan Winters and other stars paying tribute to the influential Mort Sahl!

(June 4, 2007 Hollywood, CA) Legendary comedian, pundit and author Mort Sahl's 80th birthday will be celebrated with an All Star tribute and salute on Thursday, June 28th, 2007 at 8:00pm at the Wadsworth Theater in Brentwood.

Among the many stars appearing are Woody Allen (who will appear on tape), Shelley Berman, David Brenner, Albert Brooks, Jay Leno, Richard Lewis, Bill Maher, Kevin Nealon, Paula Poundstone, Jack Riley, Drew Carey, David Steinberg and Jonathan Winters, plus many surprise guests. Larry King is the MC for the evening.

Mort Sahl was arguably the most influential comedian of the postwar era; a provocative political satirist, he singlehandedly revolutionized the comedy medium to create an art form with a scope and impact far beyond mere slapstick and gags. Sahl's conversational, free-associative style -- an amalgam of anecdotes, one-liners and pithy asides -- forever elevated the stand-up stage from its humble, toothless beginnings into a respected forum for eye-opening social commentary.

Budd Friedman, owner of The Improv Comedy Clubs and one of the organizers of the evening said today in a statment "So many of the great comic minds of the past several decades owe a huge debt to Mort. Assembling all these comics, and the many people behind the scenes who are donating their time, was easy once they knew who it was for. You hear the word "legend" bantered about so often, but in the case of Mort Sahl, there's really no other word that describes him."

On Sunday, June 3rd 2007, the Los Angeles chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War conducted Operation First Casualty. Former Marine Sargent Jason Lemiuex, who served three deployments in Iraq stated, "...under the premise that the first casualty of war is the truth. And the American people are getting fed this notion that we're in Iraq spreading freedom and making Iraq safe for democracy when really we're imposing a state of martial law on the people over there."

Taking the streets of Santa Monica by storm, Operation First Casualty was a huge success in raising awareness amongst the general population about the need to bring the troops home now. As veterans of the Iraq war shouted at, searched and hooded civilian volunteers, passers-by got a taste of what an occupation is like. During the street theatre, reenactments of a combat patrol, a riot with mass detention, and a soldier wounded by a roadside bomb occurred.

Throughout the day we will be discussing the New Rules and the Pilot Program which will be going into effect with this event. Come make your voice heard on the Mic.

The Walls are being threatened with removal unless tagging in the area is reduced and the area stays clean. Venice area residents have been complaining to the City of Los Angeles regarding tagging in the area. ICU Art has negotiated a Pilot Program with the City of Los Angeles in an effort to keep the walls up. We have developed this program as a six-month trial period to see if the program can succeed. The program is managed by ICU Art with the Graffiti Artist in mind. If the program is a success, there is the possibility of more yards in other parts of the city being opened. Please help make this program a success. Keep the walls alive.

no tagging in the neighborhood
must be 18 years old to use spray paint

Summary of the New Rules
The area is being renamed the Venice Public Art Walls.
The walls will be open only on weekends and City holidays.
The walls will be closed on weekdays to painting. Enforced by LAPD.
All artists will need a permit to paint at any time.
Permits will be free, and will be issued on-site by ICU Art.
Strict LAPD enforcement of anti-vandalism laws in the Venice area.
Minors can paint with brushes and rollers only.
Large walls are for pieces only.
Last pieces up Sunday afternoon run all week.

WHAT: "PUBLIC ART LAW: FROM BRONZE SCULPTURES TO MURALS"
You have just been awarded a commission to create a bronze sculpture
or a mural. Now what? An attorney, foundry owner knowledgeable in
bronze sculptures and a muralist will discuss the legal issues and
the nuts and bolts steps necessary for the artist's successful
completion of the project.

Speakers: Louis E. Greenwald, Esq., Sandy Decker (Decker

Louis E. Greenwald is an attorney who practices employment,
contract, and art law at the law firm Choi & Greenwald. Mr.
Greenwald represents artists, art galleries, art foundries, and art
appraisers. Mr. Greenwald has represented artists seeking payment
for services and seeking to prevent the destruction and/or
modification of their art. Mr. Greenwald has also drafted and
negotiated many contracts for artists, art galleries, art foundries,
and art appraisers.

Sandy Decker: DECKER STUDIOS FINE ARTS FOUNDRY SERVICES is a full
service fine arts Ateiler, providing a complete range of casting and
fabrication services. It's professional staff works in a vast range
of materials, including Bronze, Stainless Steel, Silver, Gold, and
Aluminum.

With their eight hundred square foot gallery they are able to
display a wide range of sculpture devoted entirely to bronze. The

Emily Winters is a Co-Founder and Chair of the Venice Arts Council,
and has been a resident of Venice for 43 years. The Venice Arts
Council serves as a forum for community input on public art,
promotes projects that include resident artists and their work, and
gives collaborative support to local arts organizations. Ms.
Winters is a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute where she majored
in figure drawing and painting. She studied painting and glazing
techniques with John Rodgers Cox
and also studied with Isabel McKinnon, a Bauhaus School advocate of
the Hans Hoffman space concept, among others. Recently, she has
started the process of refurbishing two of her murals in Venice that
have been badly damaged by tagging.

Diego Teo is a mixed media artist based in Mexico City. His referential and detritus-like objects derive their meaning from a discourse based on everyday objects and the urban environment and the meanings they acquire inside a number of socio- cultural contexts that the artist explores. His works have been shown in museums, galleries, and artspaces in Spain, Japan, Cuba, Poland, the USA, and throughout Mexico, including at Museo de Arte Moderno (Mexico City), 8th International Biennale of small graphic formand ex.libris (Ostrow, Poland), ARCO (Madrid, Spain), Feria ESCOU (New York), Casa de las Americas (Havana, Cuba), and Grupo Xix im (Uwa-Cho, Japan). Teo is the first visiting artist-in-residence to Los Angeles sponsored by the Jumex Foundation, a leading international supporter of art and cultural exchange based in Mexico.

Based in Los Angeles, RIM magazine is a dedicated to showcasing and exploring new contemporary art practices and artists in Mexico, Los Angeles, and beyond. RIM's founder and editor is Ichiro Irie, who is also an artist-in-residence at 18th Street Arts Center. Irie is also featured in a full-page article in last week's LA Weekly.

The Impeach Gonzales campaign is going really well. Yesterday, we hit #1 most viewed video on all of YouTube. This is a big deal because it helps us reach a lot of new people who come to YouTube to check out the top videos. 150,000 people have seen the video so far, and over 40,000 have signed the petition. Throughout the day we will be discussing the New Rules and the Pilot Program which will be going into effect with this event. Come make your voice heard on the Mic.

The Walls are being threatened with removal unless tagging in the area is reduced and the area stays clean. Venice area residents have been complaining to the City of Los Angeles regarding tagging in the area. ICU Art has negotiated a Pilot Program with the City of Los Angeles in an effort to keep the walls up. We have developed this program as a six-month trial period to see if the program can succeed. The program is managed by ICU Art with the Graffiti Artist in mind. If the program is a success, there is the possibility of more yards in other parts of the city being opened. Please help make this program a success. Keep the walls alive.

no tagging in the neighborhood
must be 18 years old to use spray paint

Summary of the New Rules
The area is being renamed the Venice Public Art Walls.
The walls will be open only on weekends and City holidays.
The walls will be closed on weekdays to painting. Enforced by LAPD.
All artists will need a permit to paint at any time.
Permits will be free, and will be issued on-site by ICU Art.
Strict LAPD enforcement of anti-vandalism laws in the Venice area.
Minors can paint with brushes and rollers only.
Large walls are for pieces only.
Last pieces up Sunday afternoon run all week.

Muralist Assistant Job with Art Mortimer
I will be starting a new mural in Covina, CA very soon and am looking for a person or persons to assist me. The mural is on the front of the Public Library and is about the history of the library and Covina. If you know of anyone who might be interested in working with me on this project, please pass this information along to them.

I make it very much a teaching situation, as well as a working one, where someone can learn a lot about the techniques and the process of creating a mural. I am looking for one or two people to work with me on the project on a part-time or full-time basis, preferably people with some art experience and a desire to learn about painting murals.

hard to overrule the VNC board, but she eventually decided to quit VNC

LA writer and artist APRIL DURHAM and French photographer/filmmaker OLIVE MARTIN present Common objects, new from Beyond Baroque Books. A collaborative project done in Nantes, France, it draws on scientific frameworks, experiential references, and fabricated memory: while "seemingly an anodyne, [it] will not leave us unharmed," [Presse Ocean, France, 2005]. Co-published in translation by Joca Seria Presse, France. The Project Room presents a new collaboration of Durham and Martin, "Américains d'Amérique."

PHIL PROCTOR and THE FIRESIGN THEATER emerged from the alternative LA radio scene during the summer of love, taking comedy into the psychedelic era with multi-layered satirical parodies, improvisational routines, peculiar puns, and media and literary references. PROCTOR , along with PHIL AUSTIN, PETER BERGMAN, and DAVID OSSMAN redefined the nature of recorded comedy. In 2005, BBC 4 honored Firesign Theater and in 2006, Firesign Theater's Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand me the Pliers was inducted into the Library of Congress. $7, no one turned away.

When we started in January, war profiteering was a subject that desperately needed attention. It was a story that wasn't being told and the issue cried out for exposing. And then this past Sunday November 12 the issue was front and center on page one of the New York Times and all over the news. In different and various permutations, the headlines all read that there will be hearings, there will be oversight, questions will be asked. The profiteers will be exposed.

Is amazing too strong of a word? It is a result of all your efforts.. Your support of Iraq for Sale and the issue of war profiteering has been remarkable.

So, thank you to the volunteer researchers who worked in secret to get us key information.

Thank you to the thousands of screening hosts who made over 4,000 official screenings happen.

Thank you to the Patriots Against War Profiteering who donated 8,500 DVDs to libraries, schools, and military installations around the country and around the world so this film can be seen by as wide an audience as possible. Read some responses from folks who received the film, like that of Army Medic Dan Walsh who wrote to us while serving in Iraq “This stuff needs to be known by the average American."

Thank you to Senator Dorgan, his staff and the Democratic Policy Committee who hosted hearings in DC on this issue- and invited people in Iraq for Sale to participate and share their stories. You can watch video of the hearings at the DPC website.

Thank you to the elected officials like Senator Harry Reid, Senator John Kerry, and Congressman James Clyburn who used the film to call attention to the issue and the need for oversight and accountability in the war.

Thank you to all the candidates who ran for office in last week's election - like Jim Webb, who saw the film and immediately agreed to introduce it at our DC premiere and then organized over 100 screenings in Virginia- and candidates across the country like Sherrod Brown and Bernie Sanders who used the film in their campaigns and urged voters to choose a new path.

Thank you to the folks at UNITE HERE who hosted hundreds of screenings across the Mid-West and reached thousands of union members with the film.

Thank you to the heroes and heroines in the military, like Sergeant Jon LaCore who wrote to us after watching the film in Iraq. In his letter he said, "I'm anxious to see if a change in the House and Senate will bring about a change here in Iraq." And, looking at the Sunday paper, it looks as though he may get to see change happen.

A deep heart-felt thank you to all the families and patriots who participated in this film. Your bravery in sharing your stories has touched millions. You have brought about real change and for that we are all grateful.

His books from Water Row include Candy Bars: Selected Stories, Go West, Young Toad , and The Pocket Book: A Novella and Nineteen Short Fictions . He's taught at Long Beach State since 1965.

“Federal Lawsuit Filed for Venice Beach Free Speech Zone

Venice Beach, CA – On October 16, 2006 Attorney Carol Sobel filed a new
federal lawsuit on behalf of Venice Beach Boardwalk Free Speech Zone
activists, artists, performers and vendors. The lawsuit alleges that
the City’s second try at amending LAMC 42.15 in two years, an ordinance
designed to restrict activity on the Venice Boardwalk, violates both the
First and Fourteen Amendments.

Under this latest version of LAMC 42.15 Susan B. Anthony would not be
able to set up a card table, petition signatures, accept donations, and
campaign for a woman’s right to vote on Venice Beach without a permit
and an assigned space until after noon - even if there were plenty of
empty spaces on the Boardwalk. American flag lapel pins would be banned
and no one could sell a copy of the Bible because she did not write it
herself. The lawsuit also challenges recent noise restrictions that are
enforced against some performers and ignored by the police for everyone
else.

Venice has a long and unique history of celebrating freedom of speech
and diversity. This ordinance unduly restricts constitutionally
protected expressive speech and threatens to change the historic
character of Venice Beach forever.

St. Augustine Volunteer Emergency Services operates out of a trailer behind St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Culver City, a short distance from St. Mary's. Since 1973 S.A.V.E.S. has been aiding the elderly, hungry, and homeless by providing food, temporary lodging, and gas vouchers, assisting with interpretation, and by making referrals to other agencies and to employment resources as needed.

Services are provided without regard to age, sex, race, or creed, and many of their clients are from Central and South America, Egypt, Nigeria, Vietnam, and Europe.

S.A.V.E.S. is under the direction of St. Augustine's Pastor and Mrs. Sadie Cerda, Director. It is also affiliated with several other churches in the area, including St. Mary's, which assist with donations of funds and food.

He is currently working on a book about Los Angeles. JEFF BIGGERS is winner of the American Book Award and Lowell Thomas Award for Travel Journalism. He is author of In the Sierra Madre: A Travel Memoir, based on a one-year sojourn in a Raramuri (Tarahumara) village in Mexico's Copper Canyon, investigating the likes of Antonin Artaud, B. Many contemporary artists abandon narrative descriptions of their work,
leaving it to dealers, publicists, critics, and viewers to provide their own.
Artists can sound self-serving as the price goes up.
The question is always, "What did YOU think?"
I have been curious to find a narrative for Robert Graham's Torso,
reportedly destined for placement in the Venice Circle. Some Venetians see a lobotomized
helpless victim, while others see a sensuous dancer whose extremities are only just off frame.
Robert Graham has provided a video of his 2004 exhibition at Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills.
It is titled "Robert Graham The Female Form A survey from 1968 to 2004"
This will help put the Torso in the context of his other work. It is
wordless, but has a nice version of Django on the soundtrack. What DO you think?

Many contemporary artists abandon narrative descriptions of their work,
leaving it to dealers, publicists, critics, and viewers to provide their own.
Artists can sound too self-serving as the price goes up.
The question is always, "What did YOU think?"
I have been curious to find a narrative for Robert Graham's Torso,
reportedly destined for placement in the Venice Circle. Some Venetians see a lobotomized
helpless victim, while others see a sensuous dancer whose extremities are only just off frame.
Robert Graham has provided a video of his 2004 exhibition at Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills.
It is titled "Robert Graham The Female Form A survey from 1968 to 2004"
This will help put the Torso in the context of his other work. It is
wordless, but has a nice version of Django on the soundtrack. What did YOU think?

Letter from Emily:

Hello Everyone!

I am seeking your support for funding from the Venice Neighborhood Council
for our first 2 projects by the Venice Arts Council Endangered Art Fund.
The Endangered Art Fund mission is to restore and preserve existing public
art in Venice. Due to budget cuts from several years ago, maintenance for
public art all over LA is suffering from damage due to aging and a great
deal of defacing by graffiti. There are a number of public art works in
Venice that need attention as I¹m sure you are well aware.

We have selected 2 murals the JAYA MURAL 316 Venice Blvd. and the ENDANGERED
SPECIES MURAL 801 Ocean Front Walk by myself, Emily Winters. The reason
being that they have been so badly defaced by graffiti, and the JAYA MURAL
also has a lot of damage from de-lamination. The property owners where
these two murals are located have contacted me that if these murals do not
have the graffiti removed and the murals restored they will have to paint
them out. They do not want to do this, but graffiti breeds graffiti so they
have no recourse but to paint the walls a solid color for easier graffiti
removal.

Following the guidelines requested by the VNC and DONE, we have reached a
final stage for approval from the VNC Board, Tues., Oct. 17 at 7pm. We
received 3 bids and selected Nathan Zakheim & Associates, a recognized and
respected mural conservation group recommended by Cultural Affairs. They
have developed new processes that will restore and preserve murals for
decades with easy maintenance. Their bid was also the lowest. We need to
raise $88,000 for the 2 murals and we are asking the VNC for $20,000. This
money will go only to the materials and supplies.

I am asking you for your support by either writing a letter to the Venice
Arts Council or the Venice Neighborhood Council, or email me your letter,
and/or coming to the meeting, fill out a speaker card, and speak in favor of
this project. Showing community support at this time is critical for the
approval of this request.

Written by the celebrated and eccentric cartoonist Angus Oblong, this dark comedy explores the hidden nooks and crannies of a haunted hotel and its spectral inhabitants. When a young couple checks in, the ghosts and ghouls do their best to provide a raucous and spine-tingling welcome. This "onstage cartoon" will be told in the signature Rogue style of hyper-theater and will include many puppets, projections, and digital media. Created and written by Angus Oblong with direction by Mark Valdez. Performances will be Thursday - Saturday, beginning October 20th through December 2nd.

When a young couple checks into a beautiful old hotel for a weekend getaway, the resident ghosts and ghouls do their best to provide a raucous and spine-tingling welcome. Celebrated and eccentric illustrator Angus Oblong (Adult Swim's The Oblongs) has created a living cartoon, and The Rogues, a collective of multi-disciplinary artists and designers, bring it gleefully to life with a mix of live actors, puppets and digital media in the Rogue's signature "hyper-theatrical" style.

An Unusual Day of the Dead Art Exhibit

Avenue 50 Studio

Opening Reception: Sat, Oct. 14th, from 7-11 p.m.

Spirit of the Children is an unusual art exhibit at L.A.’s celebrated Ave 50 Studio. Timed to kick-off the city’s Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead celebrations, the exhibition features artists that have created works in homage to children "who have died an untimely death due to preventable disease, gang warfare, abuse and war." Kathy Mas-Gallegos, the director of Ave 50 Studio, asked me to create a painting especially for the exhibit, so I produced a small oil I've titled, War Child - a piece memorializing the children who have been slain in warfare. I'm pleased to have my painting shown alongside artworks by Edith and Rob Abeyta, Roberto Delgado, Kathi Flood, Clement Hanami, David Andres Kietzman, Betsy Lohrer Hall, Ricardo Munoz, and John Paul Thornton.

Those expecting a quintessentially traditional Día de los Muertos exhibition are in for a few surprises. I say this because the show contains art of an international theme - with some works created by non-Chicano artists. Japanese American artist Clement Hanami is currently the Art Director of L.A.’s Japanese American National Museum, and a Commissioner on L.A.’s Cultural Affairs Commission. His mother is a hibakusha (atom bomb survivor), and his works often explore the topic of atomic war and its aftermath. Hanami will be presenting a special work at Ave 50 that commemorates those young people who died in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some might be surprised at the inclusion of John Paul Thornton in a Day of the Dead exhibit, but after examining his Missing Children paintings, his participation seems almost obligatory. Over the years, Thornton has produced hundreds of expressionist oil paintings based upon the photos of missing children found on the flyers and mailers that end up in our mailboxes.

The full title of the Ave 50 exhibit is actually, Miccailhuitontli - Spirit of the Children. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, Miccailhuitontli (Meek-Hail-We-Tontly), or "Little Feast of the Dead" - was the name of the month the Aztecs devoted to the celebration of death and departed ancestors. The month was lorded over by Mictecacihuatl, the Goddess of Death and the Queen of the Underworld. The observances began with remembrances for departed children and ended with commemorations for deceased adults. After the Spanish conquest of 1519-1521, these Aztec traditions and rituals evolved into today’s modern Día de los Muertos celebrations.

The Opening Reception for Miccailhuitontli - Spirit of the Children, takes place on Saturday, October 14, 2006, from 7 to 11 pm. The exhibit will run until November 12th, 2006.
