Many contemporary artists abandon narrative descriptions of their work,
leaving it to dealers, publicists, critics, and viewers to provide their own.
Artists can sound self-serving as the price goes up.
The question is always, "What did YOU think?"
I have been curious to find a narrative for Robert Graham's Torso,
reportedly destined for placement in the Venice Circle.  Some Venetians see a lobotomized
helpless victim, while others see a sensuous dancer whose extremities are only just off frame.
Robert Graham has provided a video of his 2004 exhibition at Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills.
It is titled "Robert Graham  The Female Form A survey from 1968 to 2004"
This will help put the Torso in the context of his other work. It is
wordless, but has a nice version of Django on the soundtrack.  What DO you think?

Virtual Venice News - Pat Hartman
Hello good people,

If you're in Venice or anywhere close, stop by the Rose Cafe where the Virtual
Venice webslave, Pat Hartman, has some paintings in the current show. Of course
there is also plenty of other great artwork too, all thanks to the indefatigable
Karen Black, who has showcased the work of countless artists in this venue over
the years. This group of pictures will be there until Nov. 12 or maybe longer,
depending.

"Rubber Tramps" is a documentary we love, and it was partly shot in Venice where
you will recognize some local folks. That's why "Rubber Tramps" has a page in

Written by the celebrated and eccentric cartoonist Angus Oblong, this dark comedy explores the hidden nooks and crannies of a haunted hotel and its spectral inhabitants. When a young couple checks in, the ghosts and ghouls do their best to provide a raucous and spine-tingling welcome. This "onstage cartoon" will be told in the signature Rogue style of hyper-theater and will include many puppets, projections, and digital media. Created and written by Angus Oblong with direction by Mark Valdez. Performances will be Thursday - Saturday, beginning October 20th through December 2nd.

When a young couple checks into a beautiful old hotel for a weekend getaway, the resident ghosts and ghouls do their best to provide a raucous and spine-tingling welcome. Celebrated and eccentric illustrator Angus Oblong (Adult Swim's The Oblongs) has created a living cartoon, and The Rogues, a collective of multi-disciplinary artists and designers, bring it gleefully to life with a mix of live actors, puppets and digital media in the Rogue's signature "hyper-theatrical" style.

Mark Vallen: Day of the Dead

----------------------------------------------------------------
Letter from Emily:

Hello Everyone!

I am seeking your support for funding from the Venice Neighborhood Council
for our first 2 projects by the Venice Arts Council Endangered Art Fund.
The Endangered Art Fund mission is to restore and preserve existing public
art in Venice. Due to budget cuts from several years ago, maintenance for
public art all over LA is suffering from damage due to aging and a great
deal of defacing by graffiti. There are a number of public art works in
Venice that need attention as I¹m sure you are well aware.

We have selected 2 murals the JAYA MURAL 316 Venice Blvd. and the ENDANGERED
SPECIES MURAL 801 Ocean Front Walk by myself, Emily Winters. The reason
being that they have been so badly defaced by graffiti, and the JAYA MURAL
also has a lot of damage from de-lamination. The property owners where
these two murals are located have contacted me that if these murals do not
have the graffiti removed and the murals restored they will have to paint
them out. They do not want to do this, but graffiti breeds graffiti so they
have no recourse but to paint the walls a solid color for easier graffiti
removal.

Following the guidelines requested by the VNC and DONE, we have reached a
final stage for approval from the VNC Board, Tues., Oct. 17 at 7pm. We
received 3 bids and selected Nathan Zakheim & Associates, a recognized and
respected mural conservation group recommended by Cultural Affairs. They
have developed new processes that will restore and preserve murals for
decades with easy maintenance. Their bid was also the lowest. We need to
raise $88,000 for the 2 murals and we are asking the VNC for $20,000. This
money will go only to the materials and supplies.

I am asking you for your support by either writing a letter to the Venice
Arts Council or the Venice Neighborhood Council, or email me your letter,
and/or coming to the meeting, fill out a speaker card, and speak in favor of
this project. Showing community support at this time is critical for the
approval of this request.

WED, Sept 20. THE RING ('52, 79m) Domenic Priore & Gene Aguilera, authors of the forthcoming book The Golden Age of Chicano Rock 'n' Roll: An East L.A. Visual History, host a very rare screening of this evocative tale set in downtown L.A.'s Bunker Hill district of a young Mexican-American boxer who learns the dirty truth about the fight game. With Art Aragon, a local boxing idol who was the only game in town (pre-Dodgers, Lakers, Rams). Chicano teenagers in the film wear just-post-Pachuco fashions, lookin' very proto-Rock 'n' Roll. Also: rare clips of legendary East LA groups, such as Ritchie Valens ("La Bamba"), Thee Midniters ("Whittier Blvd.") and Cannibal & the Headhunters ("Land of 1000 Dances) at the height of their success, and 20 minute preview of Jon Wilkman's documentary Chicano Rock! 7pm pre-show features poetry reading by Ruben Guevara (Ruben & the Jets), plus a Q&A and CD signing with Little Willie G. and Jimmy Espinoza of Thee Midniters.
WED, Oct 4. THE NET: THE UNABOMBER, LSD & THE INTERNET ('05, 115m) Lutz Dammbeck’s marvelously subversive history of the Internet and Ted Kaczinski. This insightful documentary combines speculative travelogue and investigative journalism to trace contrasting countercultural responses to the cybernetic revolution. Circling through themes of utopianism, anarchism, terrorism, CIA, LSD, Tim Leary, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, THE NET exposes a hidden matrix of revolutionary advances, coincidences, and conspiracies. Plus: FINDING THE THIRD CIRCLE ('05, 18m) Oren Goldenberg’s experimental narrative explores the impetus for collective organization and community consciousness. 6:30pm live music: the outrageous Original Booty Burglars.
WED, Oct 18. LEIMERT PARK: THE STORY OF A VILLAGE IN SOUTH CENTRAL ('05, 88m) Jeannette Lindsay's intimate and compelling documentary articulates and celebrates the profound struggles and deep spirit of the extraordinary artists and musicians who transformed a few blocks of modest storefronts in South Central Los Angeles into a vibrant and inspiring cultural oasis. Especially focussing on the ex-homeless Richard Fulton, whose coffeehouse Fifth Street Dick’s became a gathering spot for the community, and ultimately sparked a remarkable underground renaissance of African-American art and culture. With Dwight Trible, Lady Walquer Vereen, Kamau Daáood, John Outterbridge, Billy Higgins & Horace Tapscott. "An unmissable feast" -LA Weekly. 7pm LIVE MUSIC pre-show: Master percussionist TAUMBU storytells the Roots of the Drum, Part I.

See and visit the locations where everyone from Orson Welles to Steve Martin, Sarah Jessica Parker to Peter Sellers made movies in this famous beachtown. Plus horror film locations for Halloween. "Immensely readable… Hollywood Escapes encourages us to leave the couch or the theater or even the city behind in search of parks and piers, lakes and reservoirs, islands and canyons, cafes and hotels we've previously only encountered on film.” -Anthony Miller, LA City Beat.
WED, Oct 25. FORBIDDEN ZONE ('80, 74m) Richard Elfman, the founder of the Mystic Knights of the Oingo-Boingo, screens his Venice-made outlandish musical fantasy with bro Danny as a Cab Calloway-Cheshire Cat devil, the Kipper Kids, Herve Villechaize, Susan Tyrrell and more. An Unusual Day of the Dead Art Exhibit

Avenue 50 Studio
October 14th, 2006 - November 6th, 2006
Opening Reception: Sat, Oct. 14th, from 7-11 p.m.
Spirit of the Children is an unusual art exhibit at L.A.’s celebrated Ave 50 Studio. Timed to kick-off the city’s Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead celebrations, the exhibition features artists that have created works in homage to children "who have died an untimely death due to preventable disease, gang warfare, abuse and war." Kathy Mas-Gallegos, the director of Ave 50 Studio, asked me to create a painting especially for the exhibit, so I produced a small oil I've titled, War Child - a piece memorializing the children who have been slain in warfare. I'm pleased to have my painting shown alongside artworks by Edith and Rob Abeyta, Roberto Delgado, Kathi Flood, Clement Hanami, David Andres Kietzman, Betsy Lohrer Hall, Ricardo Munoz, and John Paul Thornton.

Those expecting a quintessentially traditional Día de los Muertos exhibition are in for a few surprises. I say this because the show contains art of an international theme - with some works created by non-Chicano artists. Japanese American artist Clement Hanami is currently the Art Director of L.A.’s Japanese American National Museum, and a Commissioner on L.A.’s Cultural Affairs Commission. His mother is a hibakusha (atom bomb survivor), and his works often explore the topic of atomic war and its aftermath. Hanami will be presenting a special work at Ave 50 that commemorates those young people who died in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some might be surprised at the inclusion of John Paul Thornton in a Day of the Dead exhibit, but after examining his Missing Children paintings, his participation seems almost obligatory. Over the years, Thornton has produced hundreds of expressionist oil paintings based upon the photos of missing children found on the flyers and mailers that end up in our mailboxes.

The full title of the Ave 50 exhibit is actually, Miccailhuitontli - Spirit of the Children. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, Miccailhuitontli (Meek-Hail-We-Tontly), or "Little Feast of the Dead" - was the name of the month the Aztecs devoted to the celebration of death and departed ancestors. The month was lorded over by Mictecacihuatl, the Goddess of Death and the Queen of the Underworld. The observances began with remembrances for departed children and ended with commemorations for deceased adults. After the Spanish conquest of 1519-1521, these Aztec traditions and rituals evolved into today’s modern Día de los Muertos celebrations.

The Opening Reception for Miccailhuitontli - Spirit of the Children, takes place on Saturday, October 14, 2006, from 7 to 11 pm. The exhibit will run until November 12th, 2006. Avenue 50 Studio is located in the Highland Park area of L.A., at 131 North Avenue 50, LA., CA 90042. Phone: (323) 258-1435 or visit the gallery website at, www.avenue50studio.com.

In keeping with Art Murmur’s mission of documenting noteworthy cultural phenomena, Code Blue examines the confluence of the social, economic, political, and biological ramifications of rapid change and revolutionary breakthroughs in the healthcare and medicine domains. There are many issues in healthcare and medicine currently taking center stage. Among them are the access to affordable care, the commercialization of pharmaceuticals, the controversies surrounding recent advances in genetic research, and the dramatic shifts in disease demography. Art Murmur has solicited a variety of work from its artists seeking to provide an aesthetic interpretation of our society’s struggle with the ethics and challenges of modern medicine.
