Echo Park is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Located
about two miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, Echo Park is an
incredibly diverse and culturally rich neighborhood that is more than a
century old. Neighborhood landmarks include its namesake Echo Park Lake
, Angelus Temple , Elysian Park and Victorian-era Angelino Heights . In
the past, many musicians thrived here including Marilyn Horn, and Art
Pepper. Rumor has it that Woody Guthrie and even Neil Young once lived
in the Echo Park hills.

Today, many musicians, visual artists and poets live in this "poor man's
Laurel Canyon" and the Music Festival is an opportunity for community
members to come out and sit by Echo Park Lake, enjoy a picnic and a live
performance by many of the bands who make their homes and create music
here.

Organized by violinist and EP resident, Varoujan Nalbandian, the
Festival has the support of local businesses and community groups
including the Echo Park Improvement Association, the Greater Echo Park
Elysian Neighborhood Council, Department of Recreation and Parks,
Council Member Eric Garcetti's office and the LA Alternative Press
(which is the exclusive media sponsor.)

—WANTED— Posters on Immigration

The Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG) is updating its Immigration exhibition No Human Being Is Illegal! Posters on the Myths and Realities of the Immigrant Experience, last displayed in Los Angeles in 1999. CSPG is asking artists, organizations and activists for poster donations to renovate this exhibition and help it circulate in Los Angeles as soon as possible.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...” The disparity between the eloquent promise on the Statue of Liberty and the increasing attacks directed against immigrants is enormous. Whether against the Irish or Chinese in the nineteenth century, the Japanese interned in the 1940s, or Mexicans, Central Americans and Middle Easterners now, discrimination based on race, class, language, and culture has unfortunately been consistent. The 21st century now brings us both legal attempts to criminalize immigrants—in HR 4437, and vigilante attempts to thwart and punish—as with the Minute Men. But we have also recently seen the largest demonstrations in U.S. history, as millions of immigrants and their supporters have taken to the streets to show solidarity. No Human Being is Illegal is an exhibition about discrimination and prejudice, but it is also about hope, commitment and determination. It is reclaiming the power of art to communicate and inspire people to act to make a difference.

Criteria for posters CSPG collects:
1). It must be produced in multiples such as silkscreen, offset, stencil, litho, digital output etc.
2). The poster must have overt political content.

If you would like to to donate posters, please contact:

With more than 50,000 posters, the Center for the Study of Political Graphics has the largest collection of post World War II posters in the U.S. Through traveling exhibitions, online photo albums, internships, and volunteer opportunities, CSPG is reclaiming the power of art to educate, agitate and inspire action.

Stan’s Cafe, performance stillsof "Of All the People in All the World" by Ed Dimsdale

Acclaimed performance installation will use 5½ tons of rice to illustrate human life

Los Angeles—Of All the People in All the World, by British theater company Stan’s Cafe, will open at the Skirball Cultural Center on September 26 for a one-week limited engagement as part of the troupe’s first U.S. tour. It will remain on view through October 1, 2006. In this deeply affecting work of art, five artists, all dressed in factory uniforms, will measure grains of rice to quantify statistics about human life. At their disposal will be 11,000 lbs. of the staple food—the weight of 300 million grains of rice, one grain for every person in the United States. The performers will place the rice into labeled piles portraying wide-ranging truths, from the most serious historical and contemporary facts and figures—the U.S. prison population, the civilian deaths in wars around the world in the last 10 years, the number of Tibetans living in exile today, for example—to such pop-culture trivia as the headcount at Charles and Camilla’s wedding or the thousands of “American Idol” auditions last season. The statistics represented will be changed continually over the course of the work’s six-day run at the Skirball, creating a shifting landscape of rice inside the gallery where it will be staged.

During Of All the People in All the World, visitors will be encouraged to converse with the performers, share their own stories and discuss the demographics to which they may belong. Occasionally, the artists will measure statistics suggested by visitors on the spot. To complement the work’s exhibition at the Skirball, Stan’s Cafe will also lead four interactive workshops for local elementary and middle-school students as part of the Skirball’s school outreach initiative. Participating youths will research statistics, build mounds of rice to illustrate their findings and regard the discrete grains of rice that represent themselves in the context of the millions of others on display.

“Our aim in producing this work is to capture a picture of the world in all of its vastness and mystery as well as its everyday ordinariness,” explained Stan’s Cafe artistic director, James Yarker. “It links today with yesterday, big moments in history with personal memories, great successes of the human race alongside its terrible failures and the challenges it continues to face.”

Since its premiere at the Warwick Arts Centre in Coventry, England in May 2003, Of All the People in the World has toured throughout the United Kingdom and has traveled to Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain and Ireland. The German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung praised the work, remarking that “the knowledge gained is astonishing.” Of All the People in the World will make its U.S. premiere September 8 through 17, 2006, at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s annual Time-Based Festival.

Stan’s Cafe’s performance is presented at the Skirball between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Jewish High Holy Days that mark the Jewish New Year and are known as the Days of Awe, a time of reflection for Jewish people around the world.

“We hope Of All the People in All the World will inspire visitors from the diverse communities of Los Angeles to reflect on our small, purposeful roles in an ever-expanding global society,” added Jordan Peimer, Director of Programs at the Skirball. “Some of the statistics portrayed are dismal and shocking, others playful and celebratory. These intriguing—and surprisingly beautiful—piles of rice make tangible the myriad connections among people, communities and cultures.”

At the Skirball, Of All the People in All the World will be performed by Amanda Hadingue, Charlotte Goodwin, Heather Burton, Karen Stafford and Craig Stephens, who is also associate artistic director of Stan’s Cafe. The 11,000 lbs. of rice used in the work will be recycled for animal feed when the performance is completed.

Based in Birmingham, England, Stan’s Cafe is one of Britain’s most groundbreaking theater companies today. Its members are primarily theater practitioners, working under Yarker’s artistic direction. Their unusual name, pronounced “Stan’s Kaff,” takes after the name of the café where Yarker and co-founder Graeme Rose agreed to form the company in 1991. Stan’s Cafe’s oeuvre encompasses a broad range of media, including screen-based art, theater, radio and site-specific performances requiring extensive audience participation. Most recently, the company completed Home of the Wriggler, a production powered by stationary bicycles pedaled by the cast members themselves.

Of All the People in All the World will be open during regular museum hours (see below for details); regular admission applies. Admission will be free on Sunday, October 1, as part of the citywide “Museums Free-for-All” during which day visitors will be welcomed to museums across Los Angeles at no charge. Admission to Of All the People in All the World will also be free on Thursday, September 28, as all Skirball exhibitions are free to the public every Thursday. Of All the People in the World is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Rwanda/After, Darfur/Now: Photographs by Michal Ronnen Safdie, on view through October 1, 2006.

PRESENTED WITH SUPPORT FROM THE BRITISH COUNCIL USA.

This exhibition presents nearly 40 color and black-and-white photographs taken during Michal Ronnen Safdie’s travels to the Central African countries of Rwanda and Chad. In 2002, she focused on the pilot phase of Rwanda’s gacaca tribunals, an emotionally-charged public confessional process meant to resolve the fates of lower-level genocide suspects and help victims learn precisely how their loved ones were murdered. In 2004, she documented the hardships of the refugees displaced from Sudan’s Darfur region living in Bahai, a makeshift camp on the Chadian border; two-thirds of the camp’s 18,000 refugees were women and children, still in shock from the genocide carried out against their families and communities. The exhibition challenges us to look at the aftermath and consequences of cruelty and violence perpetrated by individuals against their neighbors and by governments against their own citizens.

Born in Jerusalem, Ronnen Safdie is author of The Western Wall (1997), a book of photographs with an introduction by Yehuda Amichai, which also took the form of an international traveling exhibition. Her work has been exhibited at Salander-O’Reilly Galleries in New York, Robert Klein Gallery in Boston, and Tel Aviv University Art Gallery. Her photographs are included in museum and private collections, including George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and The Jewish Museum in New York.

THIS EXHIBITION HAS BEEN FULLY SUPPORTED BY SEVEN ANONYMOUS DONORS.

Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media

CORPORATE MEDIA EXPOSED BY A PROGRESSIVE WHO GOT INSIDE

Jeff Cohen In his new book, Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media, Jeff Cohen takes you inside TV news and the conservative biases, timidity and tabloidism that dominate it. Few media critics have been afforded an intimate, on-the-job view of the outlets they condemn, but Cohen -- who founded the media watch group FAIR -- spent years at CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. He was a senior producer at MSNBC’s Donahue during the run-up to the Iraq war, and witnessed war-enabling bias and censorship firsthand. He tells all in a biting, humorous paperback taking aim at the entire rightwing hot-air brigade that Cohen saw up close: O'Reilly, Hannity, Buchanan, Novak, Falwell, etc. (Ann Coulter wouldn’t debate him.) The book includes a foreword by Jim Hightower.

MOLLY IVINS says: "Jeff Cohen's dissection of cable TV news is both irresistibly funny and civically painful. It goes from uproarious anecdotes to those that make you wince."

Shepard Fairey, “Guns and Roses”, 2006, Mixed Media Unique Collage, 39" x 30".

In Shepard Fairey’s newest exhibition titled Rise Above the artist continues a highly charged visual discourse that attempts to reveal and skewer abuses of power, governmental hypocrisy, and loss of civil liberties. Inspired by one of Fairey’s favorite punk bands, Black Flag, the title refers to lyrics that call for people who are dissatisfied with the system to rise above the problems to provoke change, or work outside of it. “Jealous cowards try to control... rise above, we're gonna rise above”. Peace advocacy and the questioning of power and authority are dominant themes.

The exhibition will feature politically charged screenprint, stencil, and hand collaged mixed media art works which use metaphor, humor, and seductively stylized elements to deliver beautiful, provocative results. The works blur the perceived barriers between propaganda and escapist decoration, political responsibility and humor, all with the intent to stimulate both viscerally and intellectually.

IRAQ FOR SALE has launched, and it's been a wild week!

We've had some terrific media coverage and early reviews, from ABC to AlterNet to AMERICAblog: http://iraqforsale.org/reviews.php

This is a critically important first step to using the film to drive the issue of war profiteering into the pre-election debate, and of course, this unwanted publicity is making the war profiteers VERY UNHAPPY.

Already, CACI has ordered us to stop and KBR is attacking the film without having seen it. These corporations are taking a page out of Wal-Mart's playbook, and we know what a disaster those efforts to silence us were. http://iraqforsale.org/profiteers.php

Now is the time to turn the heat up. Get out there and spread the word, buy DVDs, plan screenings, and use the film to pressure elected officials to stop the profiteering. To help with your efforts, next week we'll be mailing out promotional gear (posters, stickers) to everyone who both signed up to host a screening on Brave New Theaters and bought a DVD. A lot of great stuff you can use.

Post your screening info: http://iraqforsale.org/screenings.php

Everyone from the military to truck drivers are supporting patriotism over profit. Arianna Huffington called this a "bipartisan no-brainer". Let's show the war profiteers what real democracy is about!

See you at a screening,

PASSAGES BETWEEN THE PAST AND FUTURE
Premiere Exhibit in U.S. of Photography by Bedouin Children of Abu Kaf, Israel

Come join us!

The Venice Arts Gallery is pleased to present Passages
Between the Past and Future, an exhibition of original
photography from the children of the recently recognized
Bedouin village of Abu Kaf. It will be the premiere exhibit in the
United States; the work has previously been shown in Israel at
the Museum of Bedouin Culture, northern Negev; the Yitzhak
Rabin Center, Jerusalem; the Achva College of Education; and
the Beit Berl College, Tel Aviv.
This exhibit represents a culmination of their efforts. The
results are poetic and vibrant, revealing the potent, intimate
connections among tradition, community, and family. Everyday
moments such as mothers preparing food, sisters praying, or
brothers playing in the fields, are given new importance, as the
children capture and describe their unique perspectives.
The project was designed by Frumin to empower Bedouin
children to use cameras to create individual self-portraits and
portraits of their communities, challenging the children to
articulate their hopes and dreams and to reflect upon the
strengths of their community. Their photographs are being used
educational tools, allowing Bedouin youth to better know
themselves and to share their unique perspectives with their
counterparts throughout Israel.

Aliyah Strauss - biography

Aliyah Strauss who was born in St. Louis, MO, in 1935 and later moved to
Israel, is a longtime member of Women in Black in Israel, a women's
organization founded in 1988 to oppose the Israeli occupation of
Palestine. Aliyah is chair of the Israel section of the Women's
International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). In 1995 she and an
Israeli Palestinian women, were the Israeli delegates to the NGO World
Conference on Women in China.

Aliyah also works in Bat Shalom, the Israeli part of the Jerusalem Link.
Together with the Palestinian part of the Link, the Jerusalem Center for
Women in eastern Jerusalem, they hold many dialogue activities.

In January, 2004, Aliyah became an active participant in Machsom Watch.
This group organizes small groups of women (2-5) who go into the
occupied Palestinian territories to monitor the checkpoints (machsom)
set up by the Israeli army all over the West Bank. Every day, in the
early morning when the Palestinian workers are going to work, and again
in the afternoon, the women of Machsom Watch visit the various
checkpoints and write reports that are posted on the Machsom Watch
website. These women are greatly appreciated by the Palestinians who see
them as a helping link to the Israeli occupation authority. All these
organizations are part of the Coalition of Women for Peace in Israel, a
group of women's organizations that oppose the occupation and the
militarization of Israeli society. http://coalitionofwomen.org/home/english

Aliyah has also organized and participates in the Raging Grannies in
Israel. The songs they have written and performed are very popular among
peace activists.

Walgrove Elementary School is seeking artists to create large scale
paintings on our newly paved center courtyard
as part of our Garden of
Knowledge renovation project, and we're wondering if you might be able
to help.

Our plan is to paint learning images (such as a chart of the solar
system, a map of the United States, the periodic chart, and
the hand-sign alphabet for the deaf) on the pavement and walls that
children can incorporate into their play. Per Jay Griffith's pro-bono
design, landscaping and seating will be phased in over the next six
months, but the paintings would need to be completed by mid-November.

We are the recipients of a Community Beautification Grant from the
City of LA, and also have a pledge of donated paints from Naylor
Paints to help cover costs.

Might we schedule a time to talk about the project? I'd love to get
your thoughts and see if you might be able to help.

Thanks for your consideration,

Laurie Hansen

WED, Sept 20. THE RING ('52, 79m) Domenic Priore & Gene Aguilera, authors of the forthcoming book The Golden Age of Chicano Rock 'n' Roll: An East L.A. Visual History, host a very rare screening of this evocative tale set in downtown L.A.'s Bunker Hill district of a young Mexican-American boxer who learns the dirty truth about the fight game. With Art Aragon, a local boxing idol who was the only game in town (pre-Dodgers, Lakers, Rams). Chicano teenagers in the film wear just-post-Pachuco fashions, lookin' very proto-Rock 'n' Roll. Also: rare clips of legendary East LA groups, such as Ritchie Valens ("La Bamba"), Thee Midniters ("Whittier Blvd.") and Cannibal & the Headhunters ("Land of 1000 Dances) at the height of their success, and 20 minute preview of Jon Wilkman's documentary Chicano Rock! 7pm pre-show features poetry reading by Ruben Guevara (Ruben & the Jets), plus a Q&A and CD signing with Little Willie G. and Jimmy Espinoza of Thee Midniters.

McCabes presents a very special night with American treasure MORT SAHL!

"... dazzling comedic gifts that age has not diminished. He remains a
predator of the pompous and pretentious and an election year for him is
like feeding time for a lion at the zoo." Chicago Tribune

"...the so-called "rebel without a pause" blazed a trail for the
political humorists of our time, the Dennis Millers, the Jon Stewarts,
the Al Frankens, the Bill Mahers." Chicago Sun Times

MORT SAHL, who first took an irreverent stand on the cutting edge of
American social and political humor with his legendary appearances at San
Francisco's famed "hungry i" in the early 1950s, refuses to slow down or
soften his touch after nearly five decades of ruffling the feathers of
the powerful and affluent and shaking a finger at their deeds. Sahl was
the first humorist on the cover of "Time" magazine and the first
non-musician to win a Grammy Award. His comments today are as incisive as
ever.

Crimes of the Oval Office: Bush and the Potential for Impeachment
Elizabeth Holtzman and John W. Dean in Conversation
Moderated by Los Angeles Times columnist Patt Morrison
A book signing will follow the event.

Wednesday, September 13, 2006
8:00 pm, Royce Hall on the UCLA Campus

Former congresswoman and Brooklyn district attorney Elizabeth Holtzman, author of The Impeachment of George W. Bush (Nation Books, September 2006) joins former presidential counsel and bestselling author John W. Dean (Worse Than Watergate and Conservatives Without Conscience) for a wide-ranging public airing of the charges that President Bush and members of his Administration have undermined, circumvented and violated provisions of the American Constitution they swore to uphold.

This historic event re-unites two of the central participants from the Nixon Impeachment era, both of whom have written authoritatively on the crimes of the Bush Presidency. On the eve of the fall political season and in light of recent Federal Court decisions challenging the legality of controversial Bush policies, this conversation between two of the most thoughtful and experienced observers of American politics could not be more timely.

Tickets are $15 & $10. Click here to purchase online and click here for more info.
