We are so happy Venice got funding from VNC for mural preservation, but
if I may repeat, if there's a will, there's a won't.  CJ Cole has been trying
hard to overrule the VNC board, but she eventually decided to quit VNC
rather than sign the check that the council authorized.   Do you think she will
continue her primarily self-promoting arts newsletter?

PROCTOR , along with PHIL AUSTIN, PETER BERGMAN, and DAVID OSSMAN redefined the nature of recorded comedy. In 2005, BBC 4 honored Firesign Theater and in 2006, Firesign Theater's Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand me the Pliers was inducted into the Library of Congress. $7, no one turned away.

WED, Nov 8. NEVER A DULL MOMENT: 20 YEARS OF THE REBIRTH BRASS BAND ('05, 90m) Charlie Brown captures the celebratory streets of New Orleans with the thrilling mixture of funk and traditional brass band songs. From Clark High School to their triumphant 20th Anniversary party at Tipitina’s, Brown examines the Treme neighborhood that spawned the band, the marvel and mystery behind second-line parades and the fusion of Mardi Gras Indians with brass band sounds.  With historian/clarinetist Michael White & poet/historian John Sinclair. 6pm: BELOW SEA LEVEL STORIES ('06, 64m) Post-Katrina short docs, animation & experimental films by New Orleans filmmakers, curated by Courtney Egan, provide a glimpse into the psyche of the Sinking City. 7pm: ALWAYS FOR PLEASURE ('78, 58m) Les Blank's soul-satisfying insider's portrait of New Orleans' street celebrations and unique cultural gumbo: Second-line parades, Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest. With Professor Longhair, the Wild Tchoupitoulas, the Neville Brothers and more.

WED, Nov 15. TV JUNKIE ('06, 112m) Producer Jeff Scheftel presents the uncut version of this riveting journey into the heart of darkness, where one man's fight for survival is caught on tape in an unprecedented way. A self-imposed The Truman Show with a dark twist, TV Junkie transcends one man's tragic story and becomes a harrowing reflection on a generation obsessed with celebrity and technology. Utilizing more than 3,000 hours of footage, the filmmakers tackle the Herculean task of editing it with intelligence, compassion, and honesty to tell this unbelievable story that is both a cautionary tale and a gripping portrait of a TV junkie. Plus a sneak peek at Scheftel's new LORD BUCKLEY doc. VANISHING AMERICA ('05,6m) Lance Miccio's historical reflection on the jukebox as a shared experience. Plus 6:30pm live music by master trumpeter Paul Litteral, who's played with The Rolling Stones, Tom Waits and Robert Plant.

SAT, Nov 18. PXL THIS 16 - 7 & 9pm: 2 different shows, toy camera festival www.indiespace.com/pxlthis  The irresistible irony of the PXL is that the camera's ease-of-use and affordability, which entirely democratizes movie-making, has inspired the creation of some of the most visionary, avant and luminous film of our time.

WED, Dec 6. SADAA E ZAN (Voices of Women) ('03, 70m) Renee Bergan's intimate look at the contemporary challenges facing the women in Afghanistan offers an astonishingly unsentimental view of post-Taliban life. The award winning film is composed of testimonials from women and girls who describe firsthand what it was like to live in fear for over five years, stripped of all rights and denied any access to education or meaningful work. Despite the consequences, many engaged in daring efforts to provide medical care and underground schools for women and children. Bergan, who will be present for discussion, captures the resilient spirit of these women as they bravely emerge from the rubble of tyranny and oppression, determined to reach freedom. Plus: THE TRIBE ('05, 17m) Tiffany Shlain uses the Barbie doll's Jewish inventor Ruth Handler as a jumping-off point to tell two seemingly disparate histories (Jewish culture and Ken's plastic girlfriend) that nevertheless converge in unexpected ways. 6:30- Bluesmama Joy Rippel, 7:30- Venice's own sexy seasonal songbirds The Off Their Jingle Bell Rockers

WED, Dec 13. BALLOONHAT ('05, 88m) A.G.Vermouth emotionally documents balloon twister Addi Somekh and photographer Charlie Eckert's journey across the world, revealing not only the travails of a grassroots art project, but also America’s changing status on the world stage. Each new culture embraces their balloon art, from Rio’s beaches to the rubble of Sarajevo. "Vermouth’s skillful telling of Somekh and Eckert’s unique story through the most gorgeous images will put a lasting smile on the face of all who see it." -Film Exposed. 7pm preshow: Somekh will demostrate wild balloon twisting & play far-out funky music on the balloon bass with his band UNPOPABLE.

>From Robert Greenwald:

Dear Brave New Supporters,

When we started in January, war profiteering was a subject that desperately needed attention. It was a story that wasn't being told and the issue cried out for exposing. And then this past Sunday November 12 the issue was front and center on page one of the New York Times and all over the news. In different and various permutations, the headlines all read that there will be hearings, there will be oversight, questions will be asked. The profiteers will be exposed.

Is amazing too strong of a word? It is a result of all your efforts.. Your support of Iraq for Sale and the issue of war profiteering has been remarkable.

So, thank you to the volunteer researchers who worked in secret to get us key information.

Thank you to the thousands of screening hosts who made over 4,000 official screenings happen.

Thank you to the Patriots Against War Profiteering who donated 8,500 DVDs to libraries, schools, and military installations around the country and around the world so this film can be seen by as wide an audience as possible. Read some responses from folks who received the film, like that of Army Medic Dan Walsh who wrote to us while serving in Iraq “This stuff needs to be known by the average American."

Thank you to Senator Dorgan, his staff and the Democratic Policy Committee who hosted hearings in DC on this issue- and invited people in Iraq for Sale to participate and share their stories. You can watch video of the hearings at the DPC website.

Thank you to the elected officials like Senator Harry Reid, Senator John Kerry, and Congressman James Clyburn who used the film to call attention to the issue and the need for oversight and accountability in the war.

Thank you to all the candidates who ran for office in last week's election - like Jim Webb, who saw the film and immediately agreed to introduce it at our DC premiere and then organized over 100 screenings in Virginia- and candidates across the country like Sherrod Brown and Bernie Sanders who used the film in their campaigns and urged voters to choose a new path.

Thank you to the folks at UNITE HERE who hosted hundreds of screenings across the Mid-West and reached thousands of union members with the film.

Thank you to the heroes and heroines in the military, like Sergeant Jon LaCore who wrote to us after watching the film in Iraq. In his letter he said, "I'm anxious to see if a change in the House and Senate will bring about a change here in Iraq." And, looking at the Sunday paper, it looks as though he may get to see change happen.

A deep heart-felt thank you to all the families and patriots who participated in this film. Your bravery in sharing your stories has touched millions. You have brought about real change and for that we are all grateful.

And finally THANK YOU to the 3,000 of you who contributed 50 dollars or more to make the film happen. We want you to know the front page of the New York Times would not have read the way it did, if all of you had not made it possible to begin the work on the film with your generous contributions.

Each and every one of us at Brave New Films sends our great appreciation, respect and deepest thanks for an amazing job. We celebrate the critical raising of this issue, we salute those who have stepped forward to tell the story at great personal sacrifice. We grieve for those whose lives have been sacrificed to profiteering. And, we look forward to the work ahead to make sure the profiteers are stopped.

Come January we look forward to getting your ideas on what's next for Brave New Films.

Yours sincerely,
Robert, Rick, Jim, Jimmy, Sarah, Tracy, Devin, Paris, Lissette, Jesse and everyone at Brave New Films

“Federal Lawsuit Filed for Venice Beach Free Speech Zone
-Again- City of Los Angeles Needs to Study the US Constitution”
Contact: Carol Sobel, President Los Angeles National Lawyer’s Guild
(310) 393-3055

Venice Beach, CA – On October 16, 2006 Attorney Carol Sobel filed a new
federal lawsuit on behalf of Venice Beach Boardwalk Free Speech Zone
activists, artists, performers and vendors. The lawsuit alleges that
the City’s second try at amending LAMC 42.15 in two years, an ordinance
designed to restrict activity on the Venice Boardwalk, violates both the
First and Fourteen Amendments.

Under this latest version of LAMC 42.15 Susan B. Anthony would not be
able to set up a card table, petition signatures, accept donations, and
campaign for a woman’s right to vote on Venice Beach without a permit
and an assigned space until after noon - even if there were plenty of
empty spaces on the Boardwalk. American flag lapel pins would be banned
and no one could sell a copy of the Bible because she did not write it
herself. The lawsuit also challenges recent noise restrictions that are
enforced against some performers and ignored by the police for everyone
else.

Venice has a long and unique history of celebrating freedom of speech
and diversity. This ordinance unduly restricts constitutionally
protected expressive speech and threatens to change the historic
character of Venice Beach forever.

Many contemporary artists abandon narrative descriptions of their work,
leaving it to dealers, publicists, critics, and viewers to provide their own.
Artists can sound self-serving as the price goes up.
The question is always, "What did YOU think?"
I have been curious to find a narrative for Robert Graham's Torso,
reportedly destined for placement in the Venice Circle.  Some Venetians see a lobotomized
helpless victim, while others see a sensuous dancer whose extremities are only just off frame.
Robert Graham has provided a video of his 2004 exhibition at Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills.
It is titled "Robert Graham  The Female Form A survey from 1968 to 2004"
This will help put the Torso in the context of his other work. It is
wordless, but has a nice version of Django on the soundtrack.  What DO you think?

Virtual Venice News - Pat Hartman
Hello good people,

If you're in Venice or anywhere close, stop by the Rose Cafe where the Virtual
Venice webslave, Pat Hartman, has some paintings in the current show. Of course
there is also plenty of other great artwork too, all thanks to the indefatigable
Karen Black, who has showcased the work of countless artists in this venue over
the years. This group of pictures will be there until Nov. 12 or maybe longer,
depending.

"Rubber Tramps" is a documentary we love, and it was partly shot in Venice where
you will recognize some local folks. That's why "Rubber Tramps" has a page in
Virtual Venice

And now "Rubber Tramps," a film so multi-faceted that one trailer is not enough,
has a new trailer on YouTube.

JJ Fortuenti, the talking joint, has also had his own Virtual Venice page for a
while, and now he has more of them to explain, with the help of his friends, his
philosophy. The "Lit & Lovin' it" menu is on the left-hand side of this page:

The latest addition is a conversation with an imaginary ethnomusicologist named
Stokely C. Green, about the Willie Nelson bust

Written by the celebrated and eccentric cartoonist Angus Oblong, this dark comedy explores the hidden nooks and crannies of a haunted hotel and its spectral inhabitants. When a young couple checks in, the ghosts and ghouls do their best to provide a raucous and spine-tingling welcome. This "onstage cartoon" will be told in the signature Rogue style of hyper-theater and will include many puppets, projections, and digital media. Created and written by Angus Oblong with direction by Mark Valdez. Performances will be Thursday - Saturday, beginning October 20th through December 2nd.

When a young couple checks into a beautiful old hotel for a weekend getaway, the resident ghosts and ghouls do their best to provide a raucous and spine-tingling welcome. Celebrated and eccentric illustrator Angus Oblong (Adult Swim's The Oblongs) has created a living cartoon, and The Rogues, a collective of multi-disciplinary artists and designers, bring it gleefully to life with a mix of live actors, puppets and digital media in the Rogue's signature "hyper-theatrical" style.
